Considering entering a new field or new career path in 2022? You’re not alone. The last two years have caused a lot of people to reconsider the path they’re on – both personally and professionally.

As we head into 2022, here are five tips to help you navigate a new career in a new industry.

Always Be Open to Learning

Whatever industry you’re in, there’s always going to be something new. In order to thrive and grow by becoming an authority in your specific industry, some good advice is to always be ready to learn.

If a new course comes out in your industry, enroll in it and learn a few things you didn’t know before. For instance, the metal fabrication industry is expected to experience a 9% growth from 2016 to 2026, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

When you become better at what you do, you will also become more confident and set a great example to other women who look up to you, especially in an industry like metal fabrication that has been male-dominated for decades.

Maintain a Positive Outlook

Things may not always go the way you want them to, but it’s important to always stay positive. Maintaining a good attitude will help you stay motivated and you will enjoy what you do a lot more.

To help you find this easier, keep your mind on the milestones you hope to achieve in the future, and don’t let past failures put you in a dark place. Take past defeats as lessons or stepping stones to help you grow into a better and more competent person, and you will find that things work out for the best in the end.

Consider Starting Your Own Practice

As you keep growing in your specific field, you may start to see gaps in the system left by the traditional way of doing things. You can strike out on your own and start your own practice. This way, you will be able to fully immerse yourself in the field that you love and take things in a direction that you know is for the greater good.

The plumbing industry, for instance, made over $107 billion in 2018 in revenue, and you can be sure that this was thanks to innovation and improvements in the industry. If you feel like you have a lot more to offer as the head of your specific company, don’t be shy about setting out to build it by yourself.

Learn How to Handle Conflict

This advice is important for anyone in any industry. It’s good to stay focused on the issue at hand and not be derailed by details that don’t matter. In the case of a conflict occurring, maintain a forward-looking attitude and stay focused on finding a way to get out of the specific situation in a way that propels you forward.

Don’t be willing to accept blame when you aren’t to blame, as this will only set you up to be used as the scapegoat in the future.

Support Other Women

Lastly, it’s always important to build each other up. If there are others making big career changes along with you, hold their hand and guide them, as it’s important and beneficial to have someone to look up to.

If you’re a leading mechanic, for example, you can speak with younger women wanting to join the industry. You may talk about lemon cars, as about 150,000 cars each year have repeated and unfixable problems. Those in the automotive industry will likely learn how to spot these.

We hope these tips help!
