There’s a version of rest most high-achieving women are very familiar with. You close the laptop. You sit on the couch. Your body is still, but your mind is sprinting through tomorrow’s to-do list, replaying a comment from a meeting, or calculating how many hours until you have to do it all again.
That’s not rest. That’s just work without a keyboard.
True rest, the kind that actually restores you, is something most of us were never taught to do. We were taught to be productive, to push through, to optimize. Rest was what happened when we ran out of energy, not something we practiced with intention.
That changes now. Here’s how to rest in a way that actually works.
Understand That Rest Has More Than One Form
The biggest mistake people make with rest is treating it as one-size-fits-all. Sleep is rest. Sitting quietly is rest. Done.
But rest researchers, including Dr. Saundra Dalton-Smith, who wrote extensively on the subject, identify multiple distinct types of restoration that the body and mind need. Physical rest is the obvious one: sleep, stillness, gentle movement. But there’s also mental rest (quieting the analytical brain), emotional rest (releasing the need to manage how others feel), social rest (choosing solitude or low-demand connection), sensory rest (reducing screens, noise, and input), creative rest (absorbing beauty or inspiration without producing anything), and spiritual rest (feeling connected to something beyond daily tasks).
Most burned-out women are physically resting but mentally, emotionally, and socially depleted. Sleeping eight hours while ruminating about work does not leave you restored. Knowing which type of rest you’re actually missing is the first step to getting it.
After a Long Workday: Decompress Before You Disconnect
The transition out of work mode is where most people lose the evening. You finish the last task, close a few tabs, and immediately walk into a conversation, a meal, or your inbox on your phone. Your nervous system never gets the signal that the day is over.
Build a decompression ritual that takes ten to twenty minutes and acts as a bridge between work and the rest of your evening. This doesn’t have to be elaborate. Some options that work:
A transition walk. Even ten minutes outside after work helps regulate cortisol levels and gives your mind a chance to process the day without demands. No podcast required. Let your thoughts wander.
A written shutdown. Spend five minutes writing down everything still sitting open in your head: unfinished tasks, things to follow up on, ideas you don’t want to lose. Getting them out of your brain and onto paper reduces the mental load your evening has to carry.
A sensory shift. Change something physical: change your clothes, make a cup of tea, light a candle, open a window. Sensory cues tell your nervous system that context has changed. Small as it sounds, this is effective.
The goal is not to manufacture calm. The goal is to give yourself a clear ending.
After a Major Project: Rest Like You Mean It
Finishing a big launch, closing a deal, wrapping a quarter, or delivering a long creative project leaves a particular kind of exhaustion. It’s not just tiredness. It’s a kind of flatness that makes everything feel low-stakes and slightly gray. That’s called post-achievement letdown, and it’s a recognized phenomenon.
The worst thing you can do in this window is immediately pivot to the next big thing. The second worst thing is treating a weekend as sufficient recovery for months of elevated effort.
Give yourself a genuine recovery period proportional to the effort spent. A two-month sprint warrants more than two days of rest. Practically:
Take at least one full day with no agenda. Not a day for errands. Not a day to catch up on personal admin. A day where the only requirement is that you follow what sounds genuinely good to you, hour by hour.
Resist the urge to evaluate or debrief immediately. The instinct to analyze “what worked, what didn’t” right after finishing something is real, especially for driven women. But your brain needs distance to assess clearly. Give it a week before you do any formal reflection.
Do something that has absolutely nothing to do with your industry. Take a class in something unrelated, visit somewhere new, pick up a project that’s purely physical or creative. The brain restores itself partly through novelty and context-switching, not just stillness.
After Burnout: Slow Down Slower Than You Think You Need To
Burnout recovery operates on a different timeline than ordinary tiredness. If you’ve hit a wall, the kind where motivation doesn’t return after a weekend and the things that used to energize you feel hollow, ordinary rest strategies aren’t enough.
A few principles for genuine burnout recovery:
Accept that the timeline will frustrate you. Most people recovering from burnout expect to feel better in two weeks. Research suggests full recovery can take months. Fighting that timeline by pushing yourself to “bounce back faster” prolongs it.
Reduce inputs before adding new ones. Before you can rebuild energy, you need to stop the drain. That means saying no to new commitments, cutting optional obligations, and simplifying your schedule aggressively. Rest cannot fill a bucket that is still leaking.
Seek human connection, but the low-demand kind. Isolation is not the answer to burnout, but neither is forcing yourself into socializing that requires performance. What helps is easy, comfortable connection with people around whom you don’t have to be “on.” Prioritize those relationships specifically.
Talk to someone. A therapist, a coach, or a doctor you trust. Burnout has physiological components, and trying to think your way out of it alone often doesn’t work.
The Rest Habits Worth Building Before You Need Them
The best time to practice rest is not when you’re desperate for it. It’s now, as a regular part of how you operate.
A few habits worth making routine:
One screen-free hour before bed. Not because screens are inherently evil, but because the transition from high-stimulation to sleep requires a wind-down period your brain needs and rarely gets.
One genuine day off per week. Not a day of lighter work. A day where you are not available for professional demands and you don’t feel guilty about it.
Quarterly recovery days. Schedule one day per quarter, in advance, that belongs entirely to you. No agenda. These tend to disappear if you don’t protect them ahead of time.
Regular check-ins with yourself. Once a week, ask: what kind of rest do I actually need right now? The answer changes. The habit of asking is what keeps you calibrated.
Rest Is Not a Reward. It’s a Requirement.
The idea that rest must be earned, that you deserve to stop only after you’ve done enough, is one of the most damaging beliefs high-achieving women carry. It ties rest to output, which means there is always one more thing standing between you and permission to stop.
You do not need to earn rest. You need rest because you are human, because sustained performance requires recovery, and because the version of you who is genuinely restored makes better decisions, is more creative, and leads with more presence than the version running on fumes.
Rest is not the opposite of ambition. It’s what makes ambition sustainable.
Give yourself permission to take it seriously.
