What was your wake-up call moment?
Alyson Caffrey: Right after my first son, Frank, was born. Welcome to new motherhood, am I right?! He arrived on a Thursday morning, and by Monday, I was already back in my clients’ inboxes and supporting their teams part-time. At the time, it didn’t even cross my mind that this was odd or unhealthy — I was the sole provider for our family, I carried our health insurance, and I didn’t think I had the luxury of stepping away.
I remember breastfeeding and answering Slack messages, telling myself this was “flexibility,” when really it was fear. It wasn’t until a few weeks later, when I was exhausted and resentful and felt so disconnected from the business I had built, that I realized how backwards the whole thing was. The business that was supposed to give me freedom suddenly felt like something I couldn’t escape.
Once we found out we were expecting our second son, that was the moment I knew something had to change — not just for me, but for every mother who was building a business that couldn’t function without her. And that moved me into action. Because my background is in operations, I started to see maternity leave not as a break, but as a strategic season to build a business that could actually support a mother, not drain her.
You mentioned emailing clients from your hospital bed. Can you walk us through that moment?
Alyson Caffrey: Oh gosh, yes. It’s a moment I’ll never forget. We’d just been moved from the delivery room into the postpartum room. My son had been taken to the NICU for an hour right after birth, so emotionally, I was already all over the place. We finally got him back, attempted our first feed, and on the way to the room, he fell asleep on the rolling bed.
My husband snapped the very first photo of my baby and me. And in the next breath, I put him in the bassinet, picked up my phone, and started emailing clients and messaging my team, letting them know I had given birth and would only be offline until Monday.
What’s even crazier is that earlier that morning, just before I was in early labor, I was walking around my neighborhood telling my mom on the phone, “If he could just come today, it’ll give me the weekend to recover so I can be back to work next week.” I had absolutely no idea what I didn’t know — how intense postpartum would be, how hormonal and emotional those first days were, how much my baby needed me, how much I needed rest.
In hindsight, I can see so clearly that it wasn’t a badge of honor. It was a sign that I didn’t feel like I had any choice. And that moment is a huge part of why I do this work now. I want women to feel supported enough that they can choose. Choose their baby. Choose themselves. Choose rest. Choose how they want to show up.
How was your second maternity leave different?
Alyson Caffrey: Night and day. When I got pregnant with my second son, Jack, I made that pregnancy the reason for getting my business in order. At the time, I was a fractional COO for four companies, plus doing project-based work. We were in demand, but everything depended on me showing up.
I decided that had to change. So I got extremely clear on what we offered and what we didn’t. I hired a true teammate — not just contractor help — who is still with me to this day. I built real systems for client delivery, capacity planning, communication, team support — all the things I had been building for other business owners for years, but had never built for myself.
And I stepped into an identity shift. I stopped operating like a scrappy solopreneur and started leading like an actual CEO.
As a result, my second maternity leave was the most peaceful, grounded season of my life and career. And the year after Jack was born, we grew to a team of 18 and 3x’d our revenue. None of that would’ve been possible without the foundation I built during that pregnancy.
What’s the biggest misconception women have about taking maternity leave or time off as business owners?
Alyson Caffrey: The biggest misconception is that if they’re not working, the business can’t make money. I see this with almost every service-based entrepreneur — therapists, OBMs, coaches, designers, and fractional leaders. They’ve been conditioned to believe their time is the product. And, truthfully, it is until you decide it’s not.
Because clients aren’t buying your hours; they’re buying your lens, your experience, your approach, your results. Once women reconnect with that truth and start building systems around their actual value, everything changes. Suddenly, the business doesn’t flatline every time they need a break or when life happens — and life always happens.
What are the most critical systems entrepreneurs need before maternity leave?
Alyson Caffrey: There are four key ones, and they apply to every industry I’ve ever worked in. First, you need a reliable way for new people to find you. Second, you need a clear, streamlined way for those people to understand how to work with you. Third, you need a smooth, predictable fulfillment process that ensures clients get an amazing experience, whether you’re hands-on or not. And finally, you need a way to regularly step back and look at your numbers, your systems, your energy, and make the improvements you need over time. That’s it. No complicated operating model– just four universal truths.
Most founders skip that last one entirely, or they build 4-5 things in categories 1, 2, and 3 without mastering anything. And it’s the reason their business constantly feels chaotic. Maternity leave forces you to look honestly at what’s working — and what’s not– if you want to be truly off.
For solopreneurs, how can they maintain revenue without being “on” all the time?
Alyson Caffrey: It all comes down to mapping the client journey. Before telling anyone you’re pregnant, you want a clear process that shows clients exactly where they are, where you’re taking them, and what they can work on during your leave.
There are two strategies for solo business owners I love. One is front-loading. For example, when I was doing fractional work, I’d front-load two to three months of strategy and deliverables so clients had everything they needed, even without real-time access to me. The other is pre-selling future work. We did this practice with a mama recently, reached out to everyone who’d ever inquired with her, told them about pre-booking for January start dates, and she sold out every single spot on her calendar. More than paid for her maternity leave.
This is a beautiful way to create stability, take the pressure off postpartum YOU, and make clients feel taken care of. Boundaries are everything, too, in this season. When you’re clear, clients respond with so much respect and support.
How do you help women overcome the guilt or pressure around being present moms and successful business owners?
Alyson Caffrey: I don’t believe in “having it all.” I believe in having exactly what you want. And the more specific you can be about that, the more likely it is you’ll receive it.
What I see often is that guilt usually comes from other people projecting their own choices onto you. Corporate moms who work long hours. Friends who don’t understand entrepreneurship. People who are trying to validate their own decisions. Once you separate your true desires from other people’s projections, the guilt usually melts away.
And from there, it’s about simplifying. If the two things you want most are to be a present mother and run a meaningful business, you may need to say “not right now” to other things. That’s focus, not sacrifice.
What role does introspection play in maternity leave planning?
Alyson Caffrey: A huge one. In fact, I think it’s the foundation. Women — especially service providers — are so used to supporting everyone else that they forget to ask themselves what they actually want. See how important this is from my previous response– hehe!
I encourage my clients to check in every 90 days and ask, “Is what I’m building still what I want?” We look at calendars, habits, energy, and relationships. You never want to wake up after five years and realize you built in the wrong direction.
This is why, in our work, we always start with the Maternity Leave Vision. How do you want your life to feel? How do you want your business to fit into that? From there, everything else becomes clear.
How do you define work-life balance for entrepreneurial mothers?
Alyson Caffrey: I actually don’t think work-life balance exists — at least not in the traditional sense. The people who preach balance often don’t truly love either side of their lives. Life isn’t meant to be divided perfectly down the middle.
What I believe in is building with integrity. If you’re aligned with your vision and you know your priorities for the season you’re in, then you don’t need “balance.” You need intention. You need honesty. You need systems that support you when life shifts, because life will shift.
There will never be a perfect equilibrium — but if you embrace the entire ride (good, bad, mundane), and build a business that doesn’t crumble every time your child gets sick or you want to take a break, you’ll be more grounded than 90% of founders out there.
You’ve helped mothers save over $50,000 for maternity leave. What resources do most women not know about?
Most entrepreneurs don’t qualify for traditional paid leave programs, which is incredibly frustrating. The system simply wasn’t designed for self-employed women — it was built for employees.
But there are incredible resources people overlook, particularly state grants for small businesses. Almost every state has grants for women-owned businesses, for growth, for training, for development of staff and much more. We’ve helped women apply for grants that indirectly fund their maternity leave by allowing them to stabilize or grow their businesses without dipping into personal funds.
And sometimes the biggest opportunity is simply restructuring the business — tightening up the P&L, eliminating unnecessary expenses, making offers more leveraged — and all of a sudden, there’s the money.
How do you help women who work 1:1 maintain relationships without compromising their leave?
Alyson Caffrey: There are two main paths. One is creating value that doesn’t require you in real-time. That might look like resources, pre-recorded workshops, a front-loaded strategy, or simple check-in frameworks clients can follow while you’re away.
The second is using maternity leave as a chance to pre-sell future work. I’ve had clients go into their pipelines, follow up with warm leads, and say, “I’m booking for after maternity leave — would you like to reserve a spot?” I’ve seen women fill their entire roster and fund their maternity leave this way.
It’s about leading clients through a season with clarity, not about being constantly available.
What advice would you give a woman who feels she has to choose between starting a business and starting a family?
Alyson Caffrey: If you’re delaying starting a family because your business feels too fragile, that’s not a sign you shouldn’t have kids — it’s a sign your business needs better systems. And that’s fixable. Work on your systems, give yourself the space to truly think about what you want, and then if kids aren’t on the radar, they’re not.
Hear this from a mom who has been there: working for yourself is one of the most motherhood-friendly career paths if you intentionally build it that way. I know because I’ve lived both extremes — the “I’m emailing clients from my hospital bed” version and the “my business runs smoothly while I’m home with my boys” version. You don’t have to choose between business ownership and motherhood, but you do have to choose between intentionality and utter chaos. You may just need a better business that’s structured to hold you — not consume you.
What’s your vision for the next generation of entrepreneurial mothers?
Alyson Caffrey: My vision is that women build businesses that support their family goals from the very beginning — not as an afterthought or once “burnout” hits. We’re well past the era of hustle. AI can now help anyone be visible 24/7. What will matter now is sustainability, soul, systems, and the ability to create something that genuinely adds value to your life and legacy.
I see entrepreneurial mothers building simpler, stronger companies. Companies that are assets — something that increases their family’s stability and financial freedom. I want mothers to feel proud, empowered, calm, and supported by the businesses they build.
Is there a mantra or quote that guides you?
Alyson Caffrey: Yes — one of my favorite quotes is by James Clear:
“You don’t rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems.”
I’ve believed this long before I ever heard it articulated. Systems are what hold you when life gets lifey — when you’re postpartum, exhausted, emotional, or in a season of caring for others. Most entrepreneurs build a business they can’t step away from, and it becomes a cage over time.
But with clear, simple systems, your business becomes an asset. It supports you through every life season — maternity leave, sabbatical, vacation, illness, unexpected curveballs. It allows you to show up fully in the roles that matter most.
To me, systems aren’t dry or boring. They’re one of the most loving things you can build for yourself, your future, and your family.
