Water Signs of the Zodiac: Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces
An astrological sign is more than what they are individually. Signs can have different designations; for example, your sun sign could be a mutable sign, fixed sign, cardinal sign, or be a part of any other number of sign collections.
One of the groupings of the signs is based on the four elements: fire, earth, air, and water. If you are a water sign, Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces will be your sun sign.

Cancer
Cancers are kind, nurturing, sensitive, and reclusive. Their patron sign of the crab perfectly represents this trait; they use their shells as a safe space and don’t often let people in beyond that hard exterior.
Cancers are deeply emotional, so letting people in feels very vulnerable for them. They are also sensitive to other peoples’ emotions, which can be emotionally taxing and draining.
Those born under the Cancer sign can also read other peoples’ feelings, which can make them excellent counselors or therapists, but they have to be careful not to get too attached or emotionally invested, especially due to their sensitive nature.
They like to help others process their emotions and grow from their experiences, thanks to their nurturing spirit.
Scorpio
Scorpios are emotional in a passionate way. Everything they do, they do fully. They don’t do things halfway. They get emotionally invested in projects and in helping people and are determined to see a job through until it’s done.
While Cancers will hide in their shells, Scorpios are brave. They will take risks to help people and consistently go outside their comfort zone to accomplish their goals. However, similar to Cancers, they are a bit clandestine.
They don’t like leaving themselves in an emotionally vulnerable position, so while they are brave in other capacities, they aren’t confident in putting their emotions out in the open.
Scorpios are loyal to the people they love and truthful to those around them. They believe that honesty is the best policy and they stay true to their word.
Pisces
Like Cancer and Scorpio, a Pisces does not disclose their emotions to just anyone. Even at the slightest rejection, they’ll retreat further into themselves to protect their true selves.
They have a deep sense of empathy and like to help those around them who are struggling, even at a cost to themselves.
A Pisces is the most romantic of these three signs. They like the validation that comes with partnership and they have a lot of love to give.
If you’re in a romantic relationship with a Pisces, be careful and gentle with them. They are sensitive and easily upset, so always treat them with kindness and approach difficult topics with nuance.
A Pisces is spiritual and artistic, expressing their passion and connection for the spiritual and natural world through their chosen creative outlet.
Compatibility with the 3 Water Signs
As we’ve established, water signs are deeply emotional. While it might be a good thing to have someone who understands what it’s like to feel things so deeply, the pairing could start drowning in their own and the other’s emotions.
When you’re an empath, you take on the weight of another’s emotions, and this is draining in the long term. It might be more healthy to be in a relationship with someone who is grounded and logical.
- Compatibility with Fire Signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius): Fire signs also have deep emotions, but they’re rooted in passion that can turn into outbursts. These outbursts could be really overwhelming for a water sign to handle.
- Compatibility with Air Signs (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius): The air and water signs both are “go with the flow,” “follow wherever the wind takes you” type of people. However, a water sign will soon grow weary and offended by an air sign’s flakey nature. If they miss too many scheduled get-togethers, the water sign will wonder what they did wrong and retreat deep into themselves.
- Compatibility with Earth Signs (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn): An earth sign is certainly the best pairing for a water sign. While a water sign is led by their emotion, an earth sign is grounded and sure. Because they stay rooted by logic, they can rein in the water sign’s emotions if those feelings start to get the best of them.

All three water signs are deeply rooted in their emotions. Even though they may change their beliefs, likes, and dislikes, their emotionality is one constant about them that will never change.
