Leading employee scheduling and time and attendance solution Deputy today announced its first-ever Deputy Scholarship for Women in Technology. The $1,000 scholarship aims to provide financial aid to assist in a student’s journey to a career in technology or engineering. In December, the scholarship will be awarded to one full-time, female student at an accredited public or private U.S.-based college or university currently pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science, information systems, computer engineering, business technology administration or a related IT field.
“Deputy encourages young women to ‘lean in’ and fill the gender career gap that our nation’s tech community is facing,” says Jason Walker, president of the Americas at Deputy. “Through this annual scholarship, it is our mission to not only remove some of the financial obstacles faced by today’s students, but also enable a passionate female student to continue succeeding academically and in her future career in technology.”
According to a 2015 study by the American Association of University Women, women make up over half of the population, however, only 13 percent of engineers, 28 percent of software roles and 25 percent of IT positions are held by women. Additionally, over the past 30 years, women completing technology degrees have continued to significantly decline, perpetuating the under-representation of women in technology careers.
“Last year, according to ZDNet, at least seven out of every 10 IT-related jobs went unfilled,” says Kate Sensmeier, senior director of partner development at ADP and Deputy scholarship selection committee member. “The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts the number of jobs in web development alone will increase 20 percent annually until 2022. Deputy’s Scholarship for Women in Technology is helping women take a step in the right direction, and I’m honored to be a part of the process.”
Eligible applicants may apply for the scholarship by submitting a 500 word or less essay highlighting how the scholarship and their current technology course workload will help them achieve success. The deadline to apply is November 30. A selection committee comprised of Deputy and Women in Tech leaders will then review all entries and contact the winning recipient on December 30.
