It is one of the biggest dilemmas in the workplace. Many business owners need to keep their staff productive, so therefore they need the right motivators. But sometimes, we have to wonder if we provide more perks to motivate them, but will this motivate them? Is productivity about investment, or should we be incorporating motivation in different ways? Perks Do Not Relate to Productivity

At least on the surface. It is vital that we provide a very basic level of perks to our employees. The fact of the matter is that employees demand (and deserve) a safety net. New business owners can struggle to keep up with the legal necessities and regulations. But this means that we think the most basic perks are enough, and our employees should be grateful. However, when they do not work harder, we can struggle to wonder why.

Why Productivity Is Different from Perks

Productivity is the very state of being efficient. In a business environment, we can ask a lot of our employees, and because we provide certain perks of the job, this doesn’t give them instant motivation to do better or work faster. Productivity is not just to do with the perks we provide, although if we add a little bit more, it can help, but only in the short term. Instead, we have to consider how to make the work environment a productive one. This can mean incorporating short-term motivators such as targets, however, if you want to retain employees you’ve got to think about the long-term. 

Businesses are constantly trying to find ways to motivate their employees, however, we must reconsider the whole idea of motivation, and make it an invisible concept. This means focusing on the less obvious aspects of what makes an individual more productive. Of course, it’s almost impossible to predict what makes an employee productive, but we can make alterations to the overall environment. There are things we can do to alter the ambiance, and subtly motivate them in subconscious ways. For example, getting rid of the open-plan office, giving them private rooms to focus on certain tasks, but also, very simply, listening to their feedback. If you are trying to create a better workplace culture, you must remember that the environment will stimulate a certain attitude. And no number of perks can bribe an individual to work better.

There is definitely a place for perks in the workplace, but it could be used as a reward system rather than a motivator. Because what happens when we provide perks as standard, is that after a few months, this becomes the norm, which means we need to invest more and more. The reality is that there is no one component better than the other, and while you may think that perks should stimulate individuals, the solution is to subtly affect the baseline of what constitutes a solid culture.
